Checkups &
Cleanings

Routine dental cleanings are a form of preventative dentistry that improves your oral health. If plaque remains on the teeth, it hardens, leading to decay, gum disease, and infections. During a professional cleaning, plaque and tartar that were missed by brushing and flossing are removed from your teeth.

Dr. Mina Antoun and Dr. Mary Antoun recommend scheduling a dental cleaning twice yearly. Our gentle and thorough hygienist will remove built-up plaque and allow your dentist to identify any issues. However, depending on your oral health, you may need more frequent cleanings.

What to Expect at Our High-Quality Cleaning and Checkups

Understanding what to expect from our dentist in Houston will help reduce your stress.

Many people avoid routine dental visits because they feel uneasy or uncomfortable. However, you can expect your dental cleaning at Sapphire Smiles to be straightforward, comfortable and painless. We provide comprehensive dental services, and our cleanings involve four main components:

  • Examination

  • Digital X-rays (including a complimentary 3D X-ray for superior quality of care)

  • Professional teeth cleaning

  • Oral cancer screening

Examination

We will complete a thorough, physical examination of your mouth, noting any issues with the teeth and gums. We will check for any sign of decay or structural issues with your teeth. Early detection of these conditions are key to preventing further problems in the future. If we find any dental health issue that needs to be addressed, we provide an itemized treatment plan detailing necessary dental procedures and all associated costs. We recommend treatments based solely on the health and function of your teeth.

Professional Cleaning

Our experienced hygienist begins a professional cleaning by removing plaque and tartar above and below the gum line and around your teeth. Your teeth will be polished, helping protect them from future plaque buildup. We will finish by flossing, leaving your teeth feeling completely clean.

Digital X-Rays

Digital dental X-rays create a baseline image of your oral health. Routine X-rays help your dentist detect any changes, such as new cavities. At Sapphire Smiles, we take digital X-rays that produce far less radiation than traditional X-rays, making them safer. The images are also higher resolution and easier to magnify to identify potential problems.

X-rays may be taken twice a year to check for problems in the teeth and jawbone that can't be seen with the naked eye. However, additional X-rays may be needed during your visit if there is an area of concern.

Oral Cancer Screening

An oral cancer screening is an exam that allows the dentist to detect cancer or precancerous conditions inside the oral cavity. We will visually and physically examine the inside of your mouth, including the lips, gums, tongue, and throat, for any abnormal growths or sores. We will also feel the lymph nodes in the neck to check for swelling, which can be a sign of cancer. It is important to have regular oral cancer screenings because early detection can greatly increase the chances of successful treatment and a full recovery.
